The French government will not be announced until Monday evening due to a national day of mourning for the victims of the cyclone on the island of Mayotte.
According to a statement from President Emmanuel Macron’s office, the new French government will be presented no earlier than 6:00 PM to honor the victims of the disaster. The cyclone “Chidro” may have caused the deaths of hundreds or even thousands of people on the French territory in the Indian Ocean.
New Prime Minister François Bayrou, a centrist, has been trying to form a government for nearly 10 days. His goal is to avoid a vote of no confidence in mid-January and secure the passage of the 2025 budget in February. Initially, Bayrou attempted to broaden the government by involving both the Socialist Party and the “Republicans,” hoping his cabinet would not meet the same fate as the government of Michel Barnier, which collapsed three months after its formation due to opposition to its budgetary measures.
However, despite promising to announce the government’s composition by Christmas, Bayrou has been unable to meet the demands of left-wing parties, making it difficult for him to gain support in parliament. In a letter to the “Republicans” party, Bayrou outlined measures related to security and the budget, hoping for their participation in the future government.
The Prime Minister is seeking to reduce the significant budget deficit, but he is facing the same difficulties as his predecessor.
