Four individuals involved in unrest in Amsterdam have received short prison sentences for violence against football fans attending a Europa League match between Ajax and Israel’s Maccabi Tel Aviv.
The Amsterdam District Court handed the longest sentence—six months in prison—to 32-year-old Sefi O. Another individual received a 10-week sentence, while two others were sentenced to one month each. A fifth defendant was sentenced to community service under Dutch juvenile law.
The judge stated that prison terms for the four were appropriate, given the severity of their actions and the context in which the violence occurred.
The five individuals sentenced on Tuesday were the first to be tried for the attacks, which erupted during the night of November 8, following incidents that had occurred over two days.
On the evening and night of November 7, riots broke out in Amsterdam amid a match involving the Israeli football team.
Despite a heavy police presence and a ban on pro-Palestinian demonstrations near the arena, numerous attacks on Israeli fans took place in the city after the match. Authorities later confirmed that around 50 arrests related to the incidents were made after, rather than during, the attacks.
