Eurofighter Typhoon and the NATO agency NETMA signed a contract on Monday in Rome for the purchase of up to 24 Eurofighter aircraft for the Italian Air Force.
Under this contract, Leonardo, the Italian partner of the Eurofighter Typhoon consortium, will be responsible for the final assembly of the aircraft, their delivery to the Italian Air Force, and logistical support. The total economic value of the program, which includes the procurement of 24 new fighter jets and logistical support, amounts to €7.47 billion.
These new jets will replace older Tranche 1 Eurofighter fighters, modernizing Italy’s fleet and strengthening the Eurofighter Typhoon’s role as a key asset in European air defense.
“Italy’s decision to acquire 24 additional aircraft is a fantastic milestone that underscores the importance of the Eurofighter Typhoon in Europe’s defense strategy,” commented Giancarlo Mezzanatto, CEO of Eurofighter Typhoon.
The new Italian Eurofighters will feature advanced avionics, enhanced Brimstone III and Meteor weapon systems, and new sensors. These upgrades will ensure the aircraft’s capability to integrate into Europe’s future air combat environment, even beyond 2060.
