Greek lawyers are urging a more thorough investigation into the 2023 migrant shipwreck near Pylos, which claimed hundreds of lives.
The fishing boat, carrying around 700 migrants from Pakistan, Egypt, and Syria, capsized in international waters on June 14, making it one of the deadliest Mediterranean disasters.
While 82 bodies were recovered and 104 people rescued, hundreds remain missing. Survivors allege that a towing attempt by the Greek coastguard caused the sinking, a claim the coastguard denies.
The lawyers, representing victims’ families, criticized gaps in the investigation, including the absence of testimony from senior coastguard officials and missing communication records from the rescue operation.
Human rights groups and reports, including from EU agency Frontex, suggest some deaths might have been preventable. The case has now moved to a chief prosecutor, who will decide on further legal actions.
