Heavy rains that lasted throughout Wednesday night and Thursday morning caused road flooding and other issues in several regions of Greece, reports Ekathimerini.
In Athens, the most severe problems were observed in the northern and southern suburbs. Key transport routes, including the coastal Poseidonos Avenue, were flooded. Police closed a section of the road between Alimos and Kalamaki, redirecting traffic via Vouliagmenis Avenue.
The fire service received dozens of calls from residents, mainly from the northern suburb of Kifisia, requesting assistance in pumping water out of basements and residential properties.
On the island of Evia, local authorities closely monitored the Messapios River, which began to overflow on Wednesday evening. Firefighters rescued a family with a small child after their car became stuck in the mud. Drivers are being advised to exercise extra caution. A similar situation has unfolded in other parts of Europe.
