The Estonian Consumer Protection and Technical Regulatory Authority (TTJA) has reported disruptions in three undersea communication cables between Estonia and Finland.
The damages affected two cables owned by Elisa Eesti AS and one cable operated by CITIC Telecom CPC. Despite the disruptions, service providers assure that end users remain unaffected, and communication and services between the two countries continue to function normally. The causes of the damage are still unknown, with cable owners conducting repairs while relevant authorities investigate the circumstances of the incidents.
Estonia benefits from redundant communication channels: in the event of undersea cable failures, alternative marine routes or land-based networks through Latvia can be utilized. This ensures the stability of cross-border internet connectivity.
In addition to these incidents, on December 25, it was reported that EstLink 2, a critical undersea power cable linking Estonia and Finland, experienced an emergency shutdown. The cable spans 170 kilometers, including 147 kilometers along the seabed of the Gulf of Finland, with a transmission capacity of 658 megawatts. The disruption has raised concerns, particularly with reports of suspicious vessels present in the area of the damage.
