Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt reach divorce settlement after eight years of disputes

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have finally reached a divorce settlement, her lawyer confirmed on Monday, bringing a close to one of Hollywood’s most prolonged and contentious divorces.

Jolie’s attorney, James Simon, shared the news with The Associated Press, revealing that the couple had come to an agreement. The settlement was first reported by People magazine.

“More than eight years ago, Angelina filed for divorce from Mr. Pitt,” Simon said in a statement. “She and the children left all of the properties they had shared with Mr. Pitt, and since that time she has focused on finding peace and healing for their family. This is just one part of a long ongoing process that started eight years ago. Frankly, Angelina is exhausted, but she is relieved this one part is over.”

While no court documents have been filed yet, the agreement will still need approval from a judge. A late-night email sent to Pitt’s attorney seeking comment went unanswered.

The former couple, who were together for 12 years and share six children, first made headlines in 2016 when Jolie filed for divorce following an alleged incident during a flight from Europe in which she accused Pitt of abusive behavior toward her and their children. Pitt has denied these allegations. A judge declared the couple divorced in 2019, but asset division and child custody issues remained unresolved.

The pair had hired a private judge to help resolve their case, and a decision was made for equal custody of their children. However, Jolie later sought to have the judge removed due to an undisclosed conflict of interest, and an appeals court sided with her. This forced the couple to restart the process.

Although no specifics of the divorce settlement have been disclosed, some details have emerged through a separate lawsuit filed by Pitt. In the lawsuit, Pitt alleges that Jolie backed out of an agreement to sell him her share of their French winery. It remains unclear how this legal battle will be impacted by the divorce agreement.
