German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser has indicated plans to extend land border controls beyond March 2025, even as parliamentary elections loom, potentially reshaping the country’s leadership.
Alternative for Germany (AfD), currently polling second, remains the staunchest advocate for strong, secure borders.
Germany reinstated comprehensive border checks in September, aiming to curb illegal immigration and address terrorism concerns. Faeser told Augsburger Allgemeine the measures are effective, stating, “We need these controls until the EU’s external border protections are significantly strengthened.”
Faeser highlighted a stricter immigration policy, aligning with the Christian Democratic Union’s (CDU) stance. She noted a 50% rise in immigrant expulsions over two years and the resumption of deportations for “dangerous criminals” to Afghanistan—actions Germany stands alone in executing within Europe. “We will continue to do so,” Faeser affirmed.
