Former U.S. President Donald Trump has lost an appeal in a sexual assault case involving 81-year-old writer E. Jean Carroll, CNN reports.
A federal appeals court upheld the decision requiring Trump to pay $5 million in damages. Carroll, a former columnist for several publications, published a book in 2019 alleging that Trump sexually assaulted her in a fitting room at Bergdorf Goodman in New York City in late 1995 or early 1996. She also claimed to have kept the dress she wore that day.
Trump denied the allegations, insisting he had never met Carroll personally and calling her claims false, alleging that she fabricated the story to boost book sales.
The jury found Trump liable for sexual assault, which formed the basis for the compensation. However, they did not find sufficient evidence to support the claim of rape.
Additionally, in January 2024, another court ordered Trump to pay Carroll $83.3 million for defamation and reputational harm resulting from his statements. An appeal in that case is still under review.
