Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has called for a renewed partnership between Turkey and the European Union, expressing optimism after a recent visit to Ankara by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
Fidan emphasized the need to revive high-level political dialogue, which he believes both sides are eager to achieve.
“It’s time to rebuild a more productive relationship,” Fidan stated, reflecting on years of strained ties. He urged a return to a dynamic similar to the “pre-Sarkozy” era, referencing former French President Nicolas Sarkozy’s tenure from 2007 to 2012, during which he strongly opposed Turkey’s bid for EU membership.
The Turkish minister’s comments highlight Ankara’s readiness to reset its engagement with the bloc, suggesting that both Turkey and the EU could benefit from a fresh approach to their relationship.
