Approval ratings for Macron hit a record low since taking office

The approval rating of French President Emmanuel Macron has reached a record low since he took office in 2017.

According to a survey conducted by the Ifop institute, only 21% of respondents expressed satisfaction with his performance as head of state. This is the lowest figure recorded during his presidency.

For comparison, in the history of the Fifth Republic, only former President François Hollande had a lower approval rating: in 2014, his rating dropped to a historic low of 13%. This highlights the challenging political environment Macron currently faces.

Macron’s declining popularity is attributed to several factors. These include mass protests against pension reform, which sparked widespread public anger, rising inflation, and perceptions of the presidential administration as being out of touch with citizens’ everyday concerns. The negative sentiment has been further exacerbated by environmental crises and uneven economic recovery following the COVID-19 pandemic.

Additionally, many analysts note that the decline in trust in Macron coincides with a broader erosion of confidence in government institutions across the country. There are concerns that the president’s low approval rating could hinder his ability to implement key reforms and intensify political polarization.
