On Sunday morning, an incident involving an underwater fiber-optic cable belonging to the Latvian State Radio and Television Center (LVRTC) was reported.
According to LSM, the monitoring system detected disruptions in data transmission on the section between Ventspils and Gotland. Data transmission services are temporarily being provided through alternative routes, which may cause minor slowdowns. However, most internet users in Latvia are unlikely to notice any changes in service.
LVRTC conducted an inspection and diagnosed the damage using equipment located in Ventspils. According to the center’s representative, Vineta Sprugaine, there is reason to believe that the cable sustained significant damage as a result of external impact.
To determine the exact nature of the damage, which may have occurred at a depth of more than 50 meters, repair work will need to begin. Relevant state agencies have already been informed about the incident.
Earlier, on January 14, the launch of the “Baltic Sentry” mission was announced. This initiative is aimed at patrolling key areas of the Baltic Sea to ensure the safety of underwater infrastructure.
