The European Union has reinstated its civilian mission to oversee the Rafah border crossing between Gaza and Egypt. This decision was confirmed by the EU’s head of diplomacy, Kaja Kallas.
On Friday, January 31, Kalas announced that the EU mission would be deployed at the Rafah checkpoint, following requests from both Palestinian and Israeli authorities.
“It will support Palestinian border personnel and allow the transfer of individuals out of Gaza, including those who need medical care,” she said.
The resumption of this mission follows discussions that began in May of the previous year. The EU had previously operated a similar mission at the Gaza-Egypt border nearly 20 years ago.
