Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico recently sent a letter to Elon Musk, expressing concerns over the subsidies and grants provided by the USAID agency to NGOs, media, and journalists in Slovakia. In his message, Fico congratulated Musk on his new role and the decisions he’s been making, though he quickly turned to the heart of his complaint.
Fico pointed out that USAID funds have been used in Slovakia to influence the political landscape, with the apparent aim of boosting certain political parties. He shared his frustration in a Facebook post, stating, “It’s clear from even incomplete public records that USAID funneled millions of dollars into these organizations in a short time, and the political implications are undeniable.”
The Prime Minister is asking Musk for more transparency about these financial transfers, hoping to differentiate between legitimate projects and foreign meddling in Slovakia’s politics. Fico even offered to meet Musk personally to discuss the matter further, considering the issue so serious that he sees it as a potential threat to Slovakia’s political fairness.
Though Musk doesn’t officially hold a ministerial role, Fico humorously referred to him as the “Minister” in his letter, acknowledging Musk’s influential position in reshaping the efficiency of federal operations.
