US Secretary of State: Europe can be part of Ukraine peace talks

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that Europe could be involved in the peace process regarding the conflict initiated by Russia against Ukraine. He made this comment in an interview with CBS News.

Rubio pointed out that the phone call between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin sparked a strong reaction. However, according to him, there is currently no official negotiation process, and Trump and Putin have only expressed interest in ending the conflict.

If negotiations do begin, and we haven’t reached that stage yet, Ukraine must be involved because it has been the victim of invasion, as well as Europe, because it has imposed sanctions on Putin and Russia. The Europeans have already contributed to these efforts, but we haven’t reached that point yet, emphasized Rubio.

At the Munich Security Conference, U.S. Special Representative for Ukraine and Russia, Keith Kellogg, stated that the U.S. supports Ukraine’s involvement in the “peace talks,” but does not consider including European representatives in the process.

Additionally, according to media reports, the U.S. has sent a questionnaire to European governments to determine what contribution they could make to ensuring Ukraine’s security. Against this backdrop, an emergency summit of European leaders on Ukraine will be held in Paris on Monday.
