French President Emmanuel Macron will visit the White House on Monday for a meeting with Donald Trump.
The main topic of discussion will be Europe’s role in the peaceful resolution of the conflict in Ukraine, which is currently being negotiated bilaterally between the U.S. and Russia.
According to The Times, Macron and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer aim to persuade Trump to abandon exclusive negotiations with Moscow. In return, they are prepared to offer Europe’s increased involvement in ensuring Ukraine’s long-term security.
Macron’s visit comes amid European leaders’ efforts to form a united front against a potential rapprochement between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. The French leader has publicly stated that he will try to convince Trump that making concessions to Russia would portray him as weak. However, this will not be an easy task.
On Friday, Trump sharply criticized both Macron and Starmer, claiming that neither had done enough to end the war.
Macron will be the second European leader to meet with Trump in Washington, following Polish President Andrzej Duda’s visit to the White House on Saturday. Later this week, diplomatic efforts will continue as Keir Starmer travels to the U.S. on Thursday to discuss support for Ukraine.
