Trump halts 25% tariffs on Canadian and Mexican goods until April 2

U.S. President Donald Trump has temporarily suspended the 25% tariffs recently imposed on a broad range of goods from Canada and Mexico, delaying their enforcement until April 2.

The suspension includes various products from both countries. For Canada, the measure lifts tariffs on potash, a vital resource for American farmers. However, energy products remain subject to a separate 10% tariff imposed by Trump.

This pause will last until April 2, the date when Trump has warned he may extend tariffs to all U.S. trading partners.

On March 4, Trump initially implemented 25% tariffs on most imports from Canada and Mexico.

In retaliation, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced matching 25% tariffs on $155 billion worth of U.S. goods, while Ontario introduced its own countermeasures aimed at causing economic strain on the U.S.

Additionally, on March 5, Trump granted a one-month tariff exemption for select automakers dealing with Canada and Mexico after discussions with top U.S. car industry executives.
