Several hundred protesters blocked the building of the Serbian state broadcaster RTS in Belgrade on Monday evening.
The blockade of the RTS premises in the Serbian capital was triggered by a question posed by a journalist to President Aleksandar Vučić. The journalist used the term “horde” to describe the students who have been protesting in Serbia following the collapse of a canopy at the renovated train station in the city of Novi Sad, which resulted in the deaths of 15 people.
During the blockade, the protesters allowed only employees to leave the building, but they did not permit anyone to enter. The students announced that their blockade would last for 22 hours.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs reported brief clashes between protesters and police, during which one police officer was injured. The ministry stated that law enforcement would not interfere with the protesters’ actions unless there was a violent intrusion.
Additionally, protesters blocked the building of the Vojvodina Radio and Television (RTV) in Novi Sad. University students in Serbia have been holding protests almost daily, starting after the canopy collapse at the railway station.
The protesters are demanding that the authorities publish documents related to the canopy’s collapse, hold those responsible accountable, drop charges against the students participating in the protests, and increase the budget for higher education.
