The European Union has announced the implementation of countermeasures in response to tariffs imposed by the United States.
Brussels estimates losses from the new tariffs at €26 billion and plans to impose taxes on American goods for the same amount. Starting April 1, the EU will introduce retaliatory tariffs, which will be fully implemented by April 13. This decision comes in response to the U.S. imposing a 25% tariff on steel and aluminum imports, affecting Canada and EU countries in particular.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen condemned these measures, emphasizing their negative impact on the economy. She also noted that while the EU is prepared for a proportional response, it prefers to resolve issues through negotiations:
In a world of global economic uncertainty, introducing new barriers is not in our common interest. We are open to constructive dialogue.
