Deutsche Bahn has set a new record in 2024, with 6.9 million claims for compensation filed by passengers affected by train delays, marking an increase of one million claims compared to the previous year. In total, the company paid out 196.8 million euros in compensation.
Passengers can submit claims for delayed trains through the Deutsche Bahn website or the DB Navigator app. For delays over one hour, passengers receive a 25% refund of their ticket price, while delays exceeding two hours warrant a 50% refund. If a train is canceled, passengers are entitled to a full ticket reimbursement.
Data from Deutsche Bahn reveals that more than one in three high-speed trains were late in 2024, the worst performance in 21 years. The company attributes 80% of delays to the aging and overburdened rail network. To address these issues, Deutsche Bahn plans to close 40 rail sections across Germany for extensive repairs by 2030.
