Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy has filed an appeal with the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) against a French court ruling that sentenced him to one year in prison in a wiretapping case.
This was reported on Wednesday by France-Presse, citing judicial sources. A representative of the ECHR confirmed that the court had received Sarkozy’s request following his latest conviction in December.
Earlier, in December 2024, the Court of Cassation in France rejected the former president’s appeal and upheld the sentence of one year in prison. However, the punishment may be served as house arrest with an electronic bracelet. Sarkozy was found guilty of “corruption and influence peddling,” making it an unprecedented ruling against a former head of the French state.
