In 2024, there were 27,160 recorded incidents, with Dortmund, Munich, and Berlin being the most dangerous stations.
“We want to ensure greater safety,” said Christian Bernreiter, the Transport Minister of Bavaria (CSU). Following a conference in Nuremberg, he called for more video cameras to be installed and announced government funding to modernize surveillance systems. He also proposed allowing plainclothes police officers to travel on trains for free to enhance security.
“When it comes to security, we are dealing with a patchwork quilt,” said Saarland’s Transport Minister Petra Berg (SPD). She advocated for uniform video surveillance standards and equipment nationwide.
Additionally, discussions are underway regarding a nationwide ban on carrying weapons on public transportation, as current bans vary by state, which may lead to illegal weapon transport across state borders.
The proposed measures will be sent to the Conference of Interior Ministers and the new federal government for further action on strengthening rail transport security.
