The number of first-year students enrolling in engineering, law, economics, and social sciences has increased by nearly 40% over the past 20 years, according to data from the Federal Statistical Office of Germany.
The most significant rise—about 132%—has been seen in students pursuing education in healthcare and nursing. This record growth is partly due to the demand for non-physician medical professions, such as various types of therapy and patient care.
In contrast, the popularity of humanities has declined by 22% over the same period. In Germany, humanities include fields like philology and literature, media studies, arts, theater, and musicology.
Currently, Germany has around 3 million students enrolled in higher education.
