Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has announced plans to introduce a law that would prohibit protesters from blocking bridges.
Orbán argues that the legislation is necessary to safeguard the rights of those not participating in protests.
“Freedom of assembly is important… but it is not normal that during this time thousands or tens of thousands of people are stuck in traffic,” he stated.
The Prime Minister explained that current court rulings allow the blocking of bridges, which he believes needs to be addressed. “Judges are applying a law passed by the government… We can do one thing: we can change the law to prevent the blocking of several bridges based on court decisions,” Orbán added.
In recent years, bridges—particularly in Budapest—have become focal points for anti-government protests in Hungary.
