Russia surpasses NATO in military equipment production

A report by the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) reveals that Russia has outpaced NATO in military equipment production during the 2022-2024 period, creating a “strategic threat” to the West and a “catastrophic risk” to Ukraine.

“Despite relative economic weakness, Russia has managed to surpass NATO in military equipment production in 2022-2024, even despite significant efforts by some NATO member countries to ramp up defense production. This indicates the difficulty in aligning political will, legal frameworks, industrial planning, and capacities, as well as understanding and controlling supply chains,” the report states.

It further highlights that Russia’s growing defense production advantage undermines NATO’s conventional deterrence capabilities, while posing a severe risk to Ukraine, whose international allies have become vital to its defense.
