Canadians warned that U.S. border guards may search their phones

The Canadian government has updated its travel advice for citizens planning trips to the United States, warning that electronic devices may be subject to inspection at the border.

According to CBC, the official government website now includes a clarification that U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers have “broad” authority in deciding whether to allow foreign nationals to enter the country. The update comes amid growing tensions between Canada and the U.S., driven by trade disputes dating back to the Trump administration.

Earlier reports have also highlighted cases of European citizens being detained upon entry into the U.S., prompting several countries to revise their travel advisories for America.
