China seeks to form coalition against U.S. tariffs

Chinese diplomats have been tasked with developing a campaign against U.S. trade policy, Reuters reports, citing sources.

According to these sources, Beijing has already established contacts with U.S. allies in Europe, Japan, and South Korea.

Chinese President Xi Jinping is currently on a visit to Vietnam, one of the major industrial and assembly hubs in Southeast Asia. Most of the imported goods come to Vietnam from China, while the U.S. remains the country’s primary export market. Xi’s second visit to Hanoi in the last 18 months aims to strengthen relations with the strategic neighbor, into whose economy billions of Chinese investments have been poured in recent years, Reuters clarifies.

After Vietnam, Xi Jinping will visit Malaysia and Cambodia, which is seen as an effort by Beijing to form a new alliance. Both Cambodia and Malaysia have been affected by Trump’s trade policies, with tariffs on imports of their goods to the U.S. reaching 49% and 24%, respectively.
