A state of emergency has been declared on the Spanish island of Lanzarote due to severe flooding, according to Reuters.
The heavy rainfall hit the island on Saturday, April 12 — with approximately 6 centimeters of rain falling in just two hours. As a result, homes and roads were flooded.
We worked throughout the night. Around 300 emergency calls were received, many from Arrecife and Teguise. Some homes were flooded, and a lot of mud was left on the streets, said the head of Lanzarote’s emergency services.
According to local authorities, no injuries have been reported. In a separate development, the Spanish government announced last month that it would grant one-year residence and work permits to around 25,000 migrants affected by last year’s deadly floods in the Valencia region.
Additionally, in March, a Spanish court summoned two former high-ranking regional officials for questioning as part of an investigation into possible intentional homicide during those floods.
