France launches global science initiative to attract researchers

French President Emmanuel Macron is extending an open invitation to international scientists, unveiling a new initiative aimed at drawing global research talent to France with financial backing.

In his announcement, Macron emphasized the country’s dedication to scientific advancement, stating, “research is a priority, innovation is a culture, and science is an endless horizon.”

He went on to urge global researchers to consider relocating to France: “Researchers from all over the world, choose France, choose Europe! See you on May 5.” Alongside his message, Macron shared a link to a new digital platform that will assist universities and institutions in covering the costs of hosting foreign scientists.

The program, titled Choose France for Science, will open its application portal on May 5. According to the official announcement, “France is committed to defending academic freedom around the world,” and the program will offer co-funding opportunities for “universities, schools, and research organizations” aiming to bring in international talent.

Observers suggest the initiative may be, in part, a response to recent policy shifts in the United States, where academic institutions have faced criticism and funding reductions under the Trump administration.
