US and Iran agree on third round of nuclear talks in Oman

The United States and Iran will hold the third round of talks on Iran’s nuclear program on April 26 in the capital of Oman, Muscat. This was announced by Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.

According to him, prior to the main meeting, technical consultations at the expert level will begin in Oman on April 23. Their task will be to prepare detailed proposals for a potential new agreement.

Araghchi noted that the negotiations are taking place in a “relatively positive atmosphere,” and both sides have achieved a greater understanding of the key principles and objectives of the agreement. At the same time, Iran remains skeptical about the revival of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which, according to the diplomat, is now seen more as a source of lessons learned than a viable agreement.

The American delegation, led by U.S. Special Representative Steve Vitkoff, has yet to comment on the results of the previous consultations that took place in Rome.

Araghchi expressed cautious optimism about the future prospects and emphasized that a final assessment would only be possible after the completion of the expert consultations. He also noted the potentially important role of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), headed by Rafael Grossi, with whom he recently held talks in Tehran.
