Ukraine’s former president calls for a national unity government amid renewed political infighting

With the resurgence of political activity in Ukraine and the prospect of peace negotiations, former President Petro Poroshenko has called for the formation of a national unity government. According to him, the inclusion of opposition figures in the government could help bring an end to the war with Russia.

Poroshenko, who led the country from 2014 to 2019, believes that the only way to achieve peace is through the consolidation of political forces. He emphasized that a coalition government would strengthen Ukraine’s position in negotiations, especially considering the skepticism of U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration toward the current Ukrainian leader, Volodymyr Zelensky.

Since the start of Russia’s invasion in 2022, Ukrainian politics has remained relatively quiet. However, with the potential for a ceasefire and elections on the horizon, political life in the country has once again become more active.

Poroshenko stated that peace talks could progress more smoothly if Zelensky were to open the doors to the opposition. He emphasized that the current president’s detachment and growing pressure on political opponents are hindering the process of national reconciliation.

We have no other choice but to unite, Poroshenko said in an interview. Unity in parliament and the country must lead to the end of the war.

Meanwhile, tensions between the two politicians continue to rise. Zelensky’s term, extended due to martial law, is raising questions both within political circles and beyond Ukraine’s borders. Sanctions against Poroshenko, including the freezing of his bank accounts, may exclude him from future elections. He calls these measures unconstitutional and a threat to democracy.

Despite weak support in polls, experts believe Poroshenko may seek an alliance with the popular General Valerii Zaluzhnyi, who is currently serving as Ukraine’s ambassador to the United Kingdom. Poroshenko refused to comment on any potential political cooperation but confirmed a recent meeting with Zaluzhnyi.

Amid uncertainty surrounding negotiations with Russia and pressure from Trump, Poroshenko continues to consult with Ukraine’s foreign partners through intermediaries.
