Spain: Luxury resort near Málaga converted into migrant housing, locals cry foul

A high-end wellness resort near Málaga—once a haven for tranquility and indulgence—has taken a sharp turn from its spa-and-sauna days. The Spanish government has reportedly taken over the four-star hotel to house approximately 100 illegal immigrants, shutting the doors on paying guests without prior notice.

Known for its serene setting and upscale amenities, the resort previously catered to those looking to unwind in luxury. From a heated indoor pool and modern fitness center to spa treatments ranging from €65 to €85, it marketed itself as the ultimate escape. That image now clashes with its sudden repurposing as a state-run emergency shelter.

The move, orchestrated by Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s administration, has sparked backlash—especially from locals and conservative politicians. Critics accuse the government of prioritizing undocumented migrants over struggling Spanish families.

VOX, Spain’s right-wing party, didn’t hold back. On X (formerly Twitter), the party blasted the decision: “Malagueños can’t afford homes, yet border-crossers get full board in a four-star resort.” The regional branch went further, slamming the government for failing to consult local residents or explain the sudden shift in the hotel’s role.

So far, officials haven’t revealed the nationalities of those being housed at the resort, nor have they clarified how long the facility will serve this new purpose. Guests who had bookings have been left in limbo, with no communication from hotel management, who’ve remained unreachable since the handover.

The situation has poured gasoline on an already heated debate in Spain over immigration and housing policy, as tensions rise between social welfare commitments and the country’s capacity to respond.
