Greece to install train remote control systems after 2023 accident

Greece plans to install remote control systems for trains by September to make rail transportation safer. This was announced on Monday, April 28, by the country’s Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

During a government meeting, more than two years after the country’s worst railway disaster, which claimed the lives of 57 people, Mitsotakis stated that by September next year, the entire railway network of Greece would be equipped with automatic remote brakes and train control systems (ETCS).

He noted that to prevent potential collisions, a real-time train tracking system would be implemented as a second level of safety.

Investigators looking into the accident stated that train remote control systems could have prevented the 2023 railway disaster and that security gaps remain.
Mitsotakis also promised that this year, the country’s 2,400 km railway network would be fully upgraded by 2027.
