Hundreds of scientists involved in preparing the U.S. National Climate Assessment were dismissed by the administration of former President Donald Trump, according to The Washington Post, which cites internal documents.
The National Climate Assessment is an official report published every four years since 2000, tracking climate change across the United States. The dismissed experts had been working on the next edition of the report, which was scheduled for release in 2028.
According to the report, the scientists were informed that they were being “released from their duties,” and that the structure and content of the upcoming report were under review. The letter from the administration did not clarify the future of the document.
Additionally, as previously reported by Politico, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio ordered the disbanding of the Office of Global Change, which had been responsible for implementing and coordinating the country’s international climate policy.
