Scholz’s party approves coalition agreement, bringing government formation closer

Germany’s Social Democratic Party (SPD) has approved a coalition agreement with the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the Christian Social Union (CSU), bringing the formation of a new government closer.

According to the party, 84.6% of members voted in favor, while 15.4% voted against.

The vote was conducted electronically and concluded at midnight, with 56% of SPD members participating.

Since April 15, 358,000 SPD members have had the opportunity to vote online on the 144-page agreement titled “Responsibility for Germany.”

Previously, the document had been approved by the CSU leadership and a small congress of the CDU.

The Social Democrats plan to present their seven ministers for the new government on Monday. Boris Pistorius is expected to remain the Minister of Defense. Media also suggest that party co-chair Lars Klingbeil may become Vice Chancellor and Finance Minister.
