As concerns over a potential global conflict grow, a new survey shows that most Austrians are reluctant to take up arms to defend their country.
The poll, conducted by Austrian public opinion research institute INTEGRAL and published on May 1, reveals that 55% of respondents fear the outbreak of a third world war.
“At the same time, only 16% are willing to actively defend Austria in the event of war—men significantly more often (27%) than women (9%),” the report states.
The study also highlights how Austria’s historical legacy influences current public opinion. According to the findings, 62% of Austrians believe that, because of the country’s role in World War II, Austria has a special moral obligation to promote peace and international cooperation.
“At the same time, 82% of respondents agree that future generations should not bear responsibility for the crimes of World War II,” INTEGRAL added.
