In the proposed U.S. budget for 2026, former President Donald Trump has put forward an initiative to end funding for migrant and refugee resettlement programs.
According to a White House explanatory note, the measure is aimed at combating illegal immigration, which the administration claims is often disguised as asylum seeking.
The proposal includes eliminating $3.5 billion in funding previously allocated to such programs. One of the programs potentially facing cuts is Reception and Placement, which supported major non-governmental organizations involved in resettling migrants in small towns across the United States.
