Sweden is ready to pay migrants up to 32 thousand euros for voluntary departure from the country

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson has announced plans to significantly increase financial support for migrants who choose to voluntarily return to their home countries. Currently, the amount stands at €900, but the government is proposing to raise it to €32,000 — nearly 35 times more.

In an interview with Euronews, Kristersson emphasized that strengthening migration control is a top priority, and part of the broader strategy includes expanding voluntary return programs.

He pointed out that the current payments have had little impact: in 2023, only one out of 70 applications for the subsidy was approved. According to the Prime Minister, increasing the amount could provide an incentive for those who see no prospects for integrating into Swedish society.

The initiative was inspired by Denmark’s experience, where similar measures are already in place.

The program is expected to come into effect on January 1, 2026. Earlier, in 2023, the Swedish government tightened its migration policies, including preparations to introduce stricter requirements for obtaining citizenship. Minister for Migration Johan Forssell confirmed that the new restrictions are set to take effect in January 2025.
