Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to travel to Washington on Tuesday, May 6, for his first official meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump, according to CNN.
The visit comes shortly after the victory of the Liberal Party in Canada’s parliamentary elections, which resulted in Carney assuming the role of prime minister. The two leaders are expected to discuss bilateral relations, trade, and economic cooperation.
Despite traditionally strong ties between the two countries, relations between Ottawa and Washington have been strained in recent months. Since returning to the White House, Trump has made a number of controversial remarks about Canada, including calling it the “51st state,” and imposed 25% tariffs on several Canadian goods. In response, Canada introduced retaliatory tariffs, although some of the U.S. duties have since been suspended.
Mark Carney has previously stated that he plans to take a firm stance in upcoming negotiations with the U.S., emphasizing the importance of defending Canada’s national interests.
President Trump, for his part, expressed optimism about future cooperation with the new prime minister, saying he expects they will have a “great relationship.”
