Czech Republic tops the EU ranking for electricity prices

The average price of one kilowatt-hour for Czech consumers with typical consumption was €0.35. This was more than €0.04 higher than the EU average.

In Germany, the price of a kilowatt-hour reached nearly €0.42, in Poland it was €0.04 less than in the Czech Republic, and in Slovakia, it was only €0.19. The lowest price for electricity among households was in Hungary, where one kilowatt-hour cost just €0.11. Taking purchasing power into account, the price of a kilowatt-hour in the Czech Republic amounted to more than €0.42.

Cyprus ranked second with a price of €0.37 per kilowatt, followed by Germany with €0.37. In Poland, the price was €0.36 per kilowatt, and in Slovakia, it was €0.23, almost half of the price in the Czech Republic. The lowest price by this indicator was in Iceland — €0.13 per kilowatt-hour.

The Czech Republic also showed the second-largest increase in electricity prices over the year — by 11.8%. The highest increase was recorded in Portugal — 14.7%. According to Eurostat, the price increase is linked to higher network maintenance costs and the gradual removal of tax benefits and subsidies. Austria recorded the largest decrease in prices — a drop of 18.8%.

However, the situation is gradually improving, and new offers for customers became more favorable last year, with the Czech Republic improving its position in this regard.

The low tariffs in Slovakia and Hungary are explained by the fact that prices there are set by the government, and the difference between market and regulated prices is covered by the budget.

In the second half of last year, electricity in the Czech Republic was once again one of the most expensive in the EU. According to Eurostat data, Czech consumers paid the fifth-highest tariffs, after Germany, Denmark, Ireland, and Belgium. Taking purchasing power into account, prices in the Czech Republic were the highest in the European Union.
