EU and UK to agree annual summits to strengthen relations

The European Union and the United Kingdom intend to agree on holding annual high-level summits to strengthen bilateral ties. This is stated in a draft joint declaration seen by Reuters, which is expected to be adopted at the May 19 meeting.

The document emphasizes the importance of transatlantic cooperation and the need to establish a stable foundation for dialogue.

The two sides will also express a common position on key global issues, including cooperation in tackling illegal migration — particularly through engagement with third countries.

Since taking office in July 2024, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has pledged to “reset” relations with the EU, which had remained strained under the previous Conservative government. The May 19 summit is expected to mark a step toward making that reset more concrete, which so far has been characterized mainly by warm diplomatic rhetoric.
