Lithuanian border guards detained more than three dozen illegal migrants at the border with Belarus during the night and morning of Wednesday, May 7.
This was reported by Lithuanian broadcaster LRT, citing information from a representative of the State Border Guard Service (VSAT).
According to the VSAT representative, two groups—one of 10 people and another of 11—attempted to cross the border with Belarus during the night. They were detained in the southern Lazdijai district.
According to border officials, the detained migrants are citizens of Afghanistan and Pakistan. An additional 10 people who illegally crossed into Lithuania were detained later that same morning.
Since the beginning of this year, Lithuania has denied entry to 628 illegal migrants. Last year, over a thousand attempts to cross the border from Belarus at unauthorized points were recorded.
