Dozens injured while celebrating Hamburger SV promotion to Bundesliga

At least 22 football fans were hospitalized in Hamburg, some in serious condition, following celebrations after the city’s football team secured promotion to the Bundesliga.

A total of 44 people received medical attention, with several injured in scuffles that broke out after the match and others jumping onto the field from the stands of Volksparkstadion, a spokesperson for emergency services reported.

With the large number of casualties, around 65 medical personnel and firefighters were deployed to the scene, and more than a dozen ambulances were called to the stadium. The incident occurred on the evening of May 10, when Hamburg’s football team clinched their spot in the Bundesliga with a dominant 6-1 victory over Ulm, with one match remaining in the second division.

Several fans ran onto the pitch just minutes before the final whistle, knocking over advertising boards. Additionally, some supporters damaged the goalposts and even dismantled them, while others stole pieces of the turf. Police were also called to prevent fans from entering the players’ locker rooms.
