Germany tightens controls on the border with Austria to combat illegal migration

The German government is once again strengthening border controls along its border with Austria in an effort to reduce the flow of illegal migrants.

Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt has revoked the liberal guidelines introduced in 2015 and implemented new regulations that allow entry to be denied even to those applying for asylum. Anyone without valid grounds will be immediately returned to Austria.

The federal police have already received orders to act, with an additional 2,000 to 3,000 officers expected to be deployed to support border patrol operations. Dobrindt emphasized that the new approach is about “clarity, consistency, and control.” Border checks at the Kiefersfelden/Kufstein crossing have been in place since 2015, and last year alone, 3,300 individuals were turned back after being denied the right to asylum.

Austria has responded cautiously but understandingly to Germany’s move. Austrian Interior Minister Gerhard Karner stated that Austria generally supports Berlin’s efforts to combat human trafficking networks. However, he also warned that any actions must remain within the bounds of European law, which permits complete denial of entry only in exceptional cases.

The Austrian police have already begun preparations for the new situation, adjusting their security measures accordingly. This pragmatic approach reflects a commitment to border protection as well as adherence to international obligations. Still, there is a risk of rising tensions between the two countries if Germany acts unilaterally. The new measures could also trigger renewed debates within the EU about the fair distribution of responsibility for accommodating refugees.
