US and China reach agreement on temporary ‘trade truce’: duties to be significantly reduced for 90 days

The United States and China have agreed to a temporary trade truce lasting 90 days, according to a statement from the White House. The agreement, the result of prolonged negotiations between the world’s two largest economies, aims to ease tensions in bilateral trade relations and help stabilize global markets.

Under the terms of the deal, China will temporarily reduce tariffs on American goods from 125% to 10% for the next three months. In return, the U.S. will lower tariffs on Chinese imports from 145% to 30%. These measures are intended to provide both sides with room to prepare for further talks and seek a long-term resolution to the ongoing trade dispute.

The new U.S. tariffs will include a base rate of 10%, along with an additional 20% levy on goods related to fentanyl — a synthetic opioid whose import and distribution the U.S. government has made a top enforcement priority. Officials in Washington emphasized that this component of the tariff is targeted and reflects serious concerns over the illegal flow of narcotics from China.

White House representatives expressed cautious optimism regarding the agreement but noted that future progress will depend on both sides demonstrating a clear commitment to transparency, adherence to international trade rules, and stronger efforts to combat smuggling.

Officials in Beijing called the agreement a “positive step” and expressed readiness to continue constructive dialogue on a wide range of economic issues, including intellectual property rights, market access, and the export of high-tech goods.
