Babiš’ right-wing populists poised for political comeback as Czech elections loom

All eyes are on the Czech Republic as the political winds shift sharply in favor of former Prime Minister Andrej Babiš. With parliamentary elections slated for October 3–4, President Petr Pavel has set the stage for what could be a dramatic change in leadership.

Poll numbers released this weekend by the Kantar agency for Czech Television paint a clear picture: Babiš’s ANO party is cruising at 35% support, leaving Prime Minister Petr Fiala’s Spolu (Together) alliance trailing far behind at just under 20%. That’s a double-digit gap — and a serious blow to the governing coalition.

It’s no secret the current center-right administration has been bleeding public support. Meanwhile, ANO, a member of the Patriots for Europe bloc in the European Parliament, has been picking up momentum across the board. If the numbers hold, the party is all but set to take command of the lower chamber.

And here’s the kicker — that likely means Babiš could reclaim the premiership and steer the formation of a new cabinet. Unless something shifts dramatically, it looks like Czech voters are ready to hand the reins back to a familiar face this fall.
