Mount Etna, Europe’s most active volcano located on the Italian island of Sicily, is currently experiencing heightened eruptive activity. Despite the intensification, operations at Catania’s international airport remain unaffected for now.
According to monitoring agencies, the strongest seismic activity was recorded after 9:00 p.m. on Monday and has continued at elevated levels. Volcanic emissions from the southeastern crater have become more frequent and vigorous, though lava flows heading east and southeast are still relatively limited in size. Smoke is also drifting in the same direction.
The eruption has not yet disrupted flights at the nearby Catania Airport, which frequently faces operational challenges due to volcanic events.
In February 2025, a previous eruption led to the diversion of numerous flights as ash clouds spread across the region. That eruption also drew large numbers of tourists, prompting local authorities to issue warnings and reinforce safety protocols.
