US suggests restarting Russia-NATO Council to advance Ukraine peace efforts

The United States has put forward a proposal to reactivate the Russia-NATO Council as part of ongoing attempts to find a resolution to the conflict in Ukraine, according to Bloomberg.

The report notes that Moscow has so far declined an earlier US ceasefire offer, which included freezing the conflict, US recognition of Crimea as part of Russia, and lifting of sanctions.

Now, the US is reportedly offering additional incentives that could appeal to Russia.

“Since then, the US has added new details to the proposal, including the suggestion to resume security talks within the Russia-NATO Council, according to a source familiar with the matter who wished to remain anonymous,” Bloomberg states.

The Russia-NATO Council was created after the Cold War to serve as a platform for security cooperation between Russia and NATO. However, its activities effectively stopped following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

The Council’s last meeting took place on January 12, 2022, in Brussels, where discussions centered on Russia’s security demands, which NATO members rejected.
