The Czech Ministry of Justice has sold nearly 480 bitcoins donated by an unknown benefactor, earning approximately 956.8 million Czech koruna (around €38.4 million), according to Novinky.
The ministry held 78 public online auctions, concluding the final one this Wednesday. The first auctions, held in late March, brought in around 9 million koruna, but as the price of bitcoin increased, proceeds from each auction gradually rose, with some lots fetching over 11.8 million koruna.
The identity of the person who donated such a large amount in cryptocurrency—and their motive—remains unknown, as the ministry has not disclosed any details.
In 2023, EU member states approved the world’s first comprehensive regulatory framework for crypto assets, including bitcoin.
