Luís Montenegro to lead minority government after Portuguese election

Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa has appointed Luís Montenegro, leader of the center-right Democratic Alliance, as the country’s next Prime Minister following early parliamentary elections.

The announcement was made on Thursday evening.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa explained that the decision was based on the outcome of the vote and came “after consulting the political parties represented in Parliament.”

“The appointment and inauguration of the government will take place after the publication of the final election results and the inaugural session of the new Assembly of the Republic,” the presidential palace said in a statement.

Montenegro’s Democratic Alliance secured 91 seats in the 230-member parliament, including two from overseas constituencies. Despite gaining seats compared to 2024, the alliance fell short of an outright majority. Montenegro will therefore govern with a minority, continuing a trend of political instability.

In a significant shift, the right-wing party Chega overtook the Socialists to become the main opposition force in Parliament for the first time.
